Laos to Open Transit Route for Cambodian Agricultural Exports to China

The announcement stated that Cambodia’s Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries and Laos’ Ministry of Agriculture and Environment have signed an agreement on the “Transit Transportation of Cambodian Agricultural Products through Laos.” The agreement establishes a new export corridor, particularly targeting the Chinese market, and is expected to reduce transportation time and logistics costs while expanding market access for Cambodian farmers.Under the agreement, the scope of transit transportation will cover a range of agricultural products, both fresh and dried, including bananas, durians, longans, rice, mangoes, cassava starch, and other potential products to be mutually agreed upon in the future.

All transit operations will comply with Cambodia’s sanitary and phytosanitary (SPS) regulations, Laos’ legal framework governing transit transportation, and relevant international standards, including those under the International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC).

As a next step, technical officials from both sides will continue consultations to determine specific border checkpoints, transport routes, cargo transfer locations, and operational procedures to ensure the agreement is implemented efficiently and promptly.

The agreement is described as a new milestone in agricultural cooperation between Cambodia and Laos, reinforcing regional connectivity. Both sides also expressed their intention to expand cooperation in other potential areas, particularly mineral investment for agricultural fertilizer production and forest resource management.
